Educational Alternatives
Charter Schools: public schools operating via a contract with the local school district. For more information and a list of operating public charter schools visit the Charter Schools page of the CDE website.
Home School: a developed plan for the education of a child which takes place in a home, is provided by the child's parent or by an adult relative of the child designated by the parent, and is under the limited supervision and control of a school district.
Institute Charter Schools: public schools operating via a contract with the State Charter School Institute.
Magnet/Focus/Option Schools/Contract Schools: schools operated by the school district with a special focus or educational program such as a Montessori school or a Math/Music/Science school. Check with the local school district for a list of magnet/focus/option schools.
Online Schools:Public, K-12 educational programs delivered via the Internet
Open Enrollment: a law that allows students to enroll at a school for which they are not zoned. Check with the local school district for specific information. (PDF)
Private Schools: nonpublic private, parochial or independent schools. Private School Review
School Program: some school districts offer an educational program at another site or with a different philosophy, but it operates under the umbrella of a neighborhood school. Examples may include a school for pregnant or parenting teens, an experiential educational school, or a school for neglected or delinquent youth. Check with the local school district for these alternative programs.
