How to Build Your Resume
the Starting from Scratch Work Sheet

This is a tool to help you create a resume. Make sure you have you relevant info before you begin entering data. The information you enter below is not saved anywhere! It will be posted to a formatted page, where you can print (although we do not recommend that, because as soon as you leave or refresh that page it is totally gone) We recommend highlighting the information shown, then copying and pasting into a word document or text editor.

Take your time and make sure the information is current, accurate and exactly what you want to say about yourself. You only get that first impression once!

Things you need before you begin:

  • Dates, names and location of employment going back at least 5 years or two employers.
  • Dates, names and location of educational institutions - NOT high School
  • Any career relevant accolades, awards or achievements relevant to the position you would like to be considered for.

Things you do NOT need before you begin, but should consider before sending out any resumes: (you can always change or update this once you have saved the version from the next page.)

  • 3 Professional references
  • 3 Personal references, not related to you
  • What you want to do, as far as what kind of position are you looking for?
  • Are you looking for a "job" or a "career"?
  • How much do you want to make, benefits, etc. (be realistic and consider "job happiness")
  • What types of things do you NOT want in a position?
  • What types of things are esse4ntial to you in a position?

Let's Get Started:

Complete each section. Note: the fields marked with an * are recommended as necessary for a complete and effective resume. Otherwise all other fields are optional as your experience, background or targeted position requires.

Education
This is often a hugely over-looked area on resumes. Enter any higher education experience including: vocational training, college and university. Degrees, certifications or acknowledgements received. Unless this is your very first job, do NOT list High School. This is a resume, not an application. If you were valedictorian of your high school, or something special of that nature, list that below in Honors, Acknowledgements and Awards. BE FACTUAL! This is where most people take liberties with their resumes, and it can come back to bite you, and possibly ruin your career!

You will be transferred to another page that will create a "printable" resume sheet. This information is NOT stored, so make sure to highlight, copy and then paste it to a text editor to run a spell check and correct any formatting issues that may arise.

Additional Resources:
If you are not sure where you want to go, another option may be temp-to-hire agencies. This is an excellent way to "test the market". Please visit Colorado Network Staffing and Career Forum for more information. We have listed many other resources in our Free Business Directory as well. Good Luck.
